Manchester United vs Chelsea – 3 Key battles to watch out for

A blockbuster clash awaits this weekend as Manchester United take on Chelsea in the Premier League. Both teams have had a mixed start to the season as United have 2 wins and 2 losses. Chelsea, on the other hand, have 2 wins, 2 draws and one loss. Both have looked defensively suspect but they look good in the attack.

It will be an interesting clash as both managers are still relatively new to their jobs and are under a bit of pressure. Obviously, Solskjaer will be under more pressure to lift United up from their current position of 15th.

Both clubs need a win for similar yet different reasons. Manchester United have just started to gain some momentum and a win over Chelsea would do them a world of good.

Chelsea desperately need a win after two embarrassing draws. A lot of superstars are expected to line up on both sides as each will look to outwit their opposite number. Below we take a look at the 3 most important player battles that could define the outcome of the game.

1. Edinson Cavani vs Thiago Silva

The former PSG teammates will be facing each other for the first time since leaving Paris. Both signed on a free transfer for their new sides and are very likely to go up against each other. While Silva has already played a few games for Chelsea, Cavani is in line to make his debut.

It will be important for Chelsea and Silva to keep Cavani quiet and not provide him any easy chances. A lot will be riding on Cavani for United too as he could lead the line in the absence of Martial. Early goals will be key to his confidence. Expect these former teammates to become foes for the 90 minutes.

2. Timo Werner vs Harry Maguire

The Chelsea front man had a difficult start to his Stamford Bridge career but has finally gotten his goals for the club and looks more settled now. Maguire too, started off this season in horrific fashion as United slumped to losses. He looked much assured in the Newcastle game and that bodes well.

Werner is a slippery customer. His ability to leave defenders in the dust was well documented against Southampton. Maguire would have to be at his absolute best if he wants to keep the German at bay.

3. Bruno Fernandes vs N’Golo Kante

The impact Fernandes had on Manchester United last season took its toll on him and the signs of fatigue were there to be seen in the opening games. Post the international break though, it feels like he is back to his old reliable self.

Kante will have his task cut out against one of the most in-form creative players in the United side and will be his direct opponent. Nonetheless, Kante still remains a world-class defensive midfielder and has dealt with good players before. Could be the most interesting duel and the winner could influence the whole game.
