Why Rangers should complete the signing of Jacob Murphy

As per Herald and Times Sport (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United outcast Jacob Murphy is keen on a move to Rangers on a loan deal this summer.

The report suggests that the Gers have been monitoring the Englishman, who has fallen down the pecking order under Steve Bruce. However, they would face competition to secure his services as the Magpies want Murphy to stay and fight for a place in the starting line-up.

Born in England, Murphy came through the ranks of Norwich City’s youth system but spent the majority of his Canaries’ career on loan spells. He played for clubs like Swindon Town, Scunthorpe United, Colchester, and Coventry City before returning to his parent club in the summer of 2016.

The following season, he excelled with the Canaries as he racked up 8 goals and 8 assists in 37 Championship games and earned a move to Newcastle United at the end of the campaign. He struggled to make an impact in his debut season with the Magpies and since then, he has been on the move.

Last season, he was in brilliant form for Sheffield Wednesday on loan. He racked up 9 goals and 6 assists 39 league games and helped the Owls finish 16th in the Championship standings.

Murphy could provide Rangers with depth in the wide areas

Steven Gerrard’s men have made a brilliant start to the new campaign as they sit atop the Premiership table, three points ahead of second-placed Hibernian. However, with the transfer window still open, the manager should look to bring in reinforcements and strengthen the squad.

At the moment, the Gers have four wingers in their ranks. Former Liverpool man Ryan Kent has been in sensational form and is their top scorer with 4 goals so far. Apart from him, no one has been up to the mark on the flanks. Jordan Jones and Glen Middleton have failed to establish themselves in the squad and Brandon Baker is just getting into the mould.

Thus, a winger is a must this summer and Newcastle’s Murphy would be a solid addition to the squad. The Englishman was in good form last season on loan but could be left with limited game time due to the arrival of Ryan Fraser. And he could be a useful player for the Gers if they sign him.

His inclusion would definitely provide them with depth in the wide areas. Murphy is capable of operating from either flank and he also has immense experience under his belt. He has the ability to succeed and could help Rangers in their pursuit of the league title.

With limited quality in the wide areas, it would be wise of the Gers to bring in a winger this summer. And Murphy could provide them with some much-needed goals. Thus, they should sign the 25-year-old Englishman at the earliest.
