Why Everton should revive their interest in Teun Koopmeiners
Back in April, The Sun suggested that Everton were interested in signing AZ Alkmaar star Teun Koopmeiners in the summer. However, no such talks have taken place since then.
Koopmeiners, 22, rose through the ranks of Alkmaar’s youth system. Despite his tender age, he has already made 110 appearances for the Dutch outfit and is one of the most influential members in the squad. The youngster has been a regular member of the Dutch U21 squad has immense experience.
The captain of his side, the midfielder led the team brilliantly, only to miss out on the league title to Ajax with a goal difference margin when the Dutch League was abruptly called off. His eye-catching displays have also attracted the attention of Serie A side AC Milan, as per the report.
Koopmeiners could be a good future star for Everton
One key area that the manager needs to focus on strengthening is the midfield. Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Mohamed Besic are the two defensive midfielders available at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal at Everton. While Gbamin has been out of action for the majority of the season due to injury, the Bosnian has been put up for sale by the club, as per Liverpool Echo.
Tom Davies, Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson are the three attack-minded midfielders in the squad. The Portuguese international Gomes suffered a major injury and was on the sidelines for quite a long time. The others have also failed to deliver in much-needed situations.
In that regard, signing Alkmaar’s Koopmeiners would be a great addition to the squad. The Dutch U-21 international racked up 8 goals in the league last season and went on to make an impact this season with his sensational form. He contributed with 16 goals and 3 assists despite playing mostly as a defensive midfielder.
The Dutchman’s versatility could be a huge boost for Ancelotti if he joins Everton. A defensive midfielder by trade, he is also capable of operating in a No.10 role. The youngster also played as a centre-back in the last three league games before the suspension.
- Why Everton should bring young talent Cole McKinnon to the side
- Why Everton offloading Yannick Bolasie is the right decision
Having let go of Morgan Schneiderlin and with a lack of quality in midfield, signing Koopmeiners would do them a world of good. He would add some much-needed depth and competition within the squad. He is just 22 and thus they should reignite their interest in the Dutchman.
