Ali Abdelaziz took another shot at the retired Conor McGregor for hiding from Tony Ferguson
Conor McGregor retired from the world of fighting yesterday and explained his actions too. The two-division former UFC champion claimed that he wasn’t interested in the game anymore since there weren’t any real quality fighters.
That came as a bit of a surprise given that the Bantamweight, Lightweight and Welterweight division are packed with top stars.
McGregor seems serious about leaving but Ali Abdelaziz hit out at the former champion. The manager of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje claimed that McGregor hid from Tony Ferguson and now has to sit and watch two of the best fight:
“You should’ve stepped in and fought tony Ferguson. You’ve been hiding from him, for years. @JustinGaethje stepped in, and got the job done. Now your ***** ass needs to sit down and watch the two best fighters in the world fight @TeamKhabib”
Abdelaziz has been one of the biggest critics of McGregor over the years, and there is a lot of history between McGregor and two of his clients.
A missed chance for McGregor?
McGregor was to fight Gaethje before the UFC 249 main event went haywire. Khabib, the Lightweight champion is stuck in Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic and his fight against Ferguson was changed.
Ferguson fought Gaethje for the interim title but El Cucuy was destroyed by Gaethje. Now a fight between Gaethje and Khabib is set for the undisputed title. However, McGregor leaving the UFC will be a huge blow to the promotion.
They already seem to have lost Jon Jones, the Light Heavyweight champion, while Henry Cejudo retired despite being the Bantamweight champion.
Jorge Masvidal has highlighted the monetary issues fighters are facing as they want a bigger share of the UFC’s revenues.
McGregor could still draw the fans for fights, but it will be interesting to see what his next step is. He lost to Khabib but returned with an impressive win over Donald Cerrone in his last outing.
McGregor has shared a retirement message several times over the past three years, but it seems this might be the final one.
