Jorge Masvidal is one of the contenders for Kamaru Usman’s Welterweight title
The pair were set to meet and even had a few skirmishes before the Super Bowl. However, Masvidal has been linked with fights against Nate Diaz and even Conor McGregor.
Usman, for his part, doesn’t know who will try to take away his belt. However, his manager, Ali Abdelaziz has left the door open for McGregor to have a shot.
Gilbert Burns is also looking for a shot at Usman, with both of them being training partners. This whole complexity of the Welterweight division got Ariel Helwani and Daniel Cormier talking.
They even brought up Leon Edwards and how he being stuck in the UK seems to have taken himself out of the title race.
Helwani was upset that Cormier during the recent UFC Fight Night claimed that Burns was ahead of Masvidal and Edwards.
Cormier gave his reasons and even claimed that Usman’s team don’t see Gamebred as a real threat:
“I think Leon [Edwards] becomes a victim of the moment. Can’t get to the country, that’s the only reason Rocky’s out of it.
“Masvidal? I don’t know. I was talking to Ali the other day and he said the negotiation for the Masvidal fight has been very difficult.
“Honestly, the Usman team doesn’t even feel that Masvidal is a real threat. They think he is a journeyman, seriously.”
Negotiations are difficult
Cormier further added that the problem between the Masvidal and Usman fight is due to finances, something the UFC has been hit hard with during the coronavirus pandemic.
The same issues have plagued Jon Jones and his desire to fight Francis Ngannou in the Heavyweight division too.
Usman vs Masvidal is a top fight, and it will be interesting to see if the UFC can get it done.
The Welterweight and Lightweight divisions in the UFC are stacked, and there is a lot of competition for places.
Gamebred is one of the hottest properties in the UFC, and it is a little disrespectful to call him a journeyman. Masvidal has worked extremely hard to get into the UFC world and is a real rags to riches story.
