Why Arsenal could do with a defender likes Axel Disasi at the moment
The 22-year-old centre-back has been impressive at the back for Reims this season that has seen them climb to sixth in the league table just in their second year after earning promotion to the top-flight. Disasi’s rock-solid displays in defence have played a vital role in Reims’ rise in rankings this season despite the side managing just 11 wins so far from 28 league games.
His sensational form at the back has helped Reims set the best defensive record in the league, having conceded a mere 21 goals this term. No other Ligue 1 side have a better record, with the second-best being table-toppers PSG and third-placed Rennes (both 24) respectively.
Disasi’s consistent displays at the back has made him one of the first few names on the team sheet, playing in all their league games except one match this season.
It has been a breakthrough season for the young centre-back, who last year made just four Ligue 1 appearances for the French side. However, Disasi just has one year remaining in his current contract.
With the player clearly uninterested in signing a new deal with the club, Arsenal have now shown an interest in the in-form Frenchman. Moreover, the Gunners see him as a cheaper alternative to their RB Leipzig target Dayot Upamecano.
Arsenal can solve their defensive woes by landing Disasi
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are looking to bolster their squad after their dismal show in the league this season. Their inconsistencies and struggles at the back have seen the side slip to a lowly 9th place in the league this season.
Except for summer signing David Luiz, none of the side’s defenders has put up a consistent display that has seen them concede 36 goals from 28 league games. Seasoned campaigners Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis have been prone to error most of the time this season that led to the side signing Pablo Mari on loan from Fluminense until the end of this season.
With Arsenal’s issues at the back clearly out in the open, roping in a defender like Disasi will only prove to be useful to the club ahead of next season. The Gunners need a consistent player at the back.
- Why Arsenal should make a move for Ismet Lushaku
- Why Adrien Rabiot would be a good signing for Arsenal
- Arsenal would be quite smart to invest their money on talented 18-year-old defensive prospect Dennis Gyamfi
Arsenal’s weak show in the defence this season despite having as many as five centre-backs shows that the side could really do with a defender like Disasi. The young Frenchman has had a sensational season and is in top form. This seems like the best time to land him at the Emirates if they are to solve their issues at the back.
