Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova was at the end receiving end of insults when she admitted to not knowing Sachin Tendulkar
The incident received wide-world attention, sparked a big furore with the Russian tennis star at the receiving end of things.
Sharapova will never forget the incident which incurred the wrath of Indian cricketing fans who went to the extent of defaming the 5-time Grand Slam champion.
It happened back in 2014 when a journalist asked Sharapova if she knew who Sachin Tendulkar was.
The following was the journalist’s question:
“Sachin Tendulkar was the other person who came in at the same time as David (Beckham). Do you know who Sachin is?”
A clearly clueless Sharapova replied quickly saying that she did not know the Indian cricket legend.
Her reply was: “I don’t.”, and this was enough to make the internet go crazy. Hell broke loose upon the Russian as Tendulkar’s fans reacted with outrage – and a dose of humour – resulting in #whoismariasharapova trending worldwide.
Here is a throwback to a few tweets that did the rounds back then in response to Sharapova’s reply:

Suffice to say, Sharapova would never forget this incident. Tendulkar is one of the greatest sportsmen in the world but the Russian should have been given some leeway.
She might not have known much about the cricket world back then, but she surely knows about it now.
“I was very lonely”
Meanwhile, Sharapova recently opened up to a press agency reporter, that she felt very lonely during her childhood.
Sharapova, who had to shift to the US, back in 1994 in a bid to improve her tennis divulged information from her past which helped her understand the struggle and made her stronger.
“I was very lonely. Also, miss my mom a lot. To be able to see me, my father always had to work hard so he could get back home early before I fell asleep. I always received insults and more treatment than others, though I did it to pursue all my dreams with enthusiasm,” she recalled.
“Because of that, I learned how to take care of myself. I also never thought about quitting because I knew what I wanted,” Sharapova concluded.
