Sunil Gavaskar was not happy at how MS Dhoni has kept himself away from the India team
Former India star Sunil Gavaskar has questioned MS Dhoni over the latter’s decision to stay away from the national team.
Dhoni has not played for India since the team’s semi-final exit from the 2019 ICC World Cup. Speaking after giving the 26th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial lecture, Gavaskar questioned Dhoni’s long absence from the team.
“I can’t tell you anything about fitness. But I think the question that needs to be asked is of MSD himself,” Gavaskar told reporters.
“He has not made himself available to play for India since July 10. That is the important point. Does anyone keep himself away from playing for India for that long? That is the question and therein lies the answer,” he said (h/t Hindustan Times)
India’s keeper struggles
Dhoni has been on a sabbatical from all forms of cricket since the loss to New Zealand in the semi-final of the World Cup after which Rishabh Pant has been played as India’s first-choice keeper-batsman ahead of the 2020 T20 World Cup.
However, Pant has not been able to do make the most of the opportunities that have been presented to him and was dropped in favour of Sanju Samson in the third T20I against Sri Lanka.
Among other issues, Gavaskar also said that he hopes remuneration for players in the Ranji Trophy is increased to bridge the gap with the remuneration in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“IPL dominates Ranji Trophy. Unless match fees are increased substantially, it (Ranji Trophy) will be considered an orphan and poor cousin of Indian cricket,” he said.
However, Gavaskar questioning Dhoni is right to an extent. There is a lot of speculation regarding the former captain’s India future and he hasn’t played since the World Cup exit in 2019.
