Sourav Ganguly lauds Ravi Ashwin on becoming the highest wicket-taker of the decade

Sourav Ganguly had some great words for Ravichandran Ashwin over an incredible feat

Former India captain and current President of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), Sourav Ganguly expressed admiration for India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his Twitter handle.

The tweet came after the ICC (International Cricket Council) announced that Ashwin ended the decade 2010-2019 as its highest wicket-taker across formats.

“Most international wickets for ashwin this decade.. what an effort .. just get a Feeling it goes unnoticed at times .. super stuff ..,” read Ganguly tweet. The post also had a screenshot of ICC’s Instagram post on Ashwin.

This decade witnessed a number of star bowlers like James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Dale Steyn and Rangana Herath, and thus it is impressive that an Indian has gone past all of them.

Why Ganguly thought that Ashwin’s effort went unnoticed is because cricket still remains a batsman’s game largely.

Ashwin made 227 international appearances in this decade across all formats, in which he scalped 564 wickets at an average of 27.15 and economy rate of only 3.47.

This includes 27 five-wicket hauls and seven 10 wicket hauls. What is important to mention is that Ashwin achieving this milestone despite not playing limited-overs cricket for the last two and a half years.

Other records held by Ashwin

The bowler from Tamil Nadu holds the record of becoming the fastest to reach the 300-wicket mark in Test cricket.

The 31-year-old made a memorable comeback to the Test XI after nearly a year’s absence recently. Ashwin then picked up his 27th five-wicket haul in the 1st innings of the 1st Test against South Africa.

However, Ashwin has not played limited-overs cricket since 2017. That is due to the selectors feeling that wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are better options.
