Sourav Ganguly had some fantastic news for cricket fans for India
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced that India, Australia, England and one more team will play each other in a four-nation Super Series which will start in 2021.
Many marquee events are lined up in the near future, beginning with the World T20 in Australia next year, followed by the same tournament’s India edition in 2021 and then this new series.
Also, In 2021, the final of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship will take place in England before India host the next 50-over World Cup in 2023.
This development comes just months after the ICC proposed to have one flagship tournament a year from 2023 to 2031.
The cricket boards of India, England and Australia all rejected this proposal.
The former India captain has now confirmed that the first edition of the super series will take place in India (h/t ESPNCricinfo):
“Australia, England, India and another top team will feature in the Super Series which begins in 2021 and the first edition of the tournament will be played in India. We have very good relations with the ECB and the meeting went off very well.”
A surprising development
A quadrangular series is a rarity on cricket. While tri-series are often played and it will be interesting to see how this goes.
The series should feature India, Australia and England regularly. While another top team would join every year.
