Why Liverpool must beat Man United to sign Mathis Rayan Cherki
Despite only turning 16 in August, Mathis Rayan Cherki has already made his Ligue 1 and Champions League debuts for Lyon. The French club have unearthed quite a few talents in recent times, including stars like Anthony Martial, Samuel Umtiti, Corentin Tolisso, Alexandre Lacazette and Tanguy Ndombele.
All these players made a mark at Lyon before earning big-money moves. And Cherki seems to be following their footsteps after catching the eyes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City, according to The Sun.
Despite being contracted to the club till 2022, Lyon might find it difficult to hold onto the wonder kid with European giants interested.
Cherki has impressed for the youth side, scoring three and assisting one in just four appearances. The attacking midfielder has made a handful of appearances for the senior squad, all from the bench.
Lately, Liverpool have placed a major emphasis on recruiting op young talent, evidenced by the fact that they already signed Harvey Elliott and Sepp Van den Berg in the summer.
The teenage forward, who can play anywhere in the front three, is one of Lyon’s most exciting youngsters. Last year, Cherki became the youngest player to score in the UEFA Youth League at the age of 15 years and 33 days in a 4-1 win over Manchester City, while he also scored a hat-trick for Lyon’s Under-17s.
Mathis Rayan Cherki would be a good long-term signing for Liverpool. Obviously, he wouldn’t make an instant impact for the Merseyside outfit but he would be an exciting player for the future.
