Virat Kohli did not take too kindly to some statements from Farokh Engineer regarding his wife, Anushka Sharma
Virat Kohli is possibly one of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game of cricket. The spotlight on the Indian captain is bright enough that every move of his is tracked.
That light is a lot more brighter now given that his wife is a successful Bollywood star. Anushka Sharma has acted in several hit movies and has often accompanied Kohli for his games.
The superstar has been seen in several tours of India too, and former India star Farokh Engineer claimed that a selector had served Sharma tea during a World Cup game (h/t India Today):
“I didn’t even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him ‘who the hell he was’, because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors.
“All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma (Kohli’s wife) cups of tea. I feel people with the stature of Dilip Vengsarkar should be in the selection committee.”
The former India star further claimed that Kohli has a huge say in who gets selected in the India team.
Kohli unhappy with comments
The India captain was speaking to a TV channel and claimed that Sharma doesn’t want to break rules or regulations and the pair respect each other’s professions.
Sharma had lashed out on Engineer regarding the comments, and Kohli backed his wife regarding the situation (h/t Telegraph):
“When the lies are spoken so much all around, they start becoming truths. So you need to speak up at some stage and that’s exactly what happened recently. She came for one World Cup game, against Sri Lanka, and the family box and the selectors’ box were different… And there was no selector in that box.”
Kohli admitted that Sharma had come with a friend or two for the game, but didn’t want his wife’s name to be dragged into the conversation regarding selectors.
“You want to mention something about the selectors, do that… Why join her name with it? We are not people who would go out and start these debates, but you have to put the truth out there — the way things actually are and the way they are perceived and accepted are very different.”
Sharma was, unfortunately, blamed by certain sections of the media for some of India’s poor performances.
However, that is far from the case as Kohli is one of the best and everyone is capable of having a poor outing.
Engineer did come out and said those comments as a joke. Hopefully, the trio can put an end to this issue soon.
