Leeds United Opinion: Whites should move for John Swift in the summer
According to claims from Football Insider, Leeds United are weighing up a move for Reading star John Swift in the summer, as manager Marcelo Bielsa looks to build a squad capable of beating the drop in the Premier League next season.
Football Insider understands that Leeds are interested in signing the 23-year-old irrespective of whether they secure promotion to the Premier League or stay in the Championship.
The Portsmouth-born midfielder has established himself as a key cog in Reading’s midfield since his move to the Madejski Stadium back in 2016 and has been one of the shining lights in what has been a rather disappointing campaign for the Royals in the Championship.
The Englishman has netted 6 goals and laid on 3 assists from 37 appearances in all competitions for Reading this season. A youth product of Chelsea, Swift made a solitary appearance in the Premier League for the Blues before establishing himself as a proven performer at the Championship level with Brentford and Reading.
And promotion-hopefuls Leeds United are confident that the former English youth international has all that it takes to make the step up to the Premier League.
As things stand, the sleeping Yorkshire giants are gradually inching closer to ending their 15-year absence from the top flight and the fans at Elland Road will be hoping that their team do not spoil their hard work with any slip-ups in the final few weeks.
However, the Whites would need to add more depth and quality to their ranks to survive in the top flight. While a backup for prolific frontman Kemar Roofe should be a priority for Bielsa, the manager should also look at options to bolster the midfield.
Leeds haven’t yet found a good enough replacement for Samuel Saiz. While Mateusz Klich has done a wonderful job this season, the Whites can certainly do with more competition for places in the middle of the park.
Moreover, Bielsa has relied upon Tyler Roberts, who is essentially a striker, to play in an attacking midfield role. Quite clearly, the manager cannot afford to field a line-up full of makeshift players in the Premier League.
To put things into perspective, John Swift would be an excellent addition to Leeds’ squad and the club’s interest in the former Chelsea academy product should create plenty of noise amongst the fans at Elland Road.
A technically-gifted and tactically-versatile midfielder who is capable of playing in attacking and box-to-box roles in the midfield, Swift is noted for his flair and trickery on the ball, tireless running and impressive range of passing.
Adept at spreading the play in the middle of the park and dictating the tempo of the game with his flawless passing and distribution, Swift has the vision and skills to execute defence-splitting through balls and key passes to unlock stubborn defences.
Known for his uncompromised work-rate and high levels of stamina, Swift also tracks back to cut out attacks with crucial tackles and interceptions. Furthermore, he is an expert from dead-ball situations and has a penchant for scoring goals with aggressive runs into the box.

Swift has a total of 43 caps for England at all youth levels comprised and he certainly looks good enough to make an impact in the Premier League. Reading are unlikely to let their prized asset depart on the cheap but Leeds should test their resolve in the summer.
