Why Manchester United should offload Jesse Lingard in the summer

According to ESPN, Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard is wanted by Atletico Madrid and AS Roma in the summer.

Jesse Lingard, 27, has struggled for form over the last 15-18 months, failing to score a Premier League goal since December 2018 and making only six league starts since August. He has also lost his place in the England squad and could miss out on the Euro 2020 this summer.

The England international has 18 months left on his Manchester United deal and Lingard remains open to the possibility of leaving the club with Atletico Madrid and AS Roma interested, the report adds.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have dropped down to seventh in the table after a 0-0 draw with Wolves on Saturday. The Red Devils’ hopes of challenging for the Premier League title this campaign were done and dusted long back, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side placed 38 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

That said, the Red Devils do have a lot of underperforming players and Solskjaer’s priority should be to offload them in the summer. One of those players is Jesse Lingard, who has found the back of the net just twice in 32 games. He went over a year without scoring domestically before ending the drought in a 6-0 thrashing over Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup.

Truly, the England international has struggled despite making close to 200 appearances for United. He has been given more than enough chances to perform but Lingard has looked woefully out of sorts for some time now. Gareth Southgate’s decision to drop him from the England squad for the last two Euro qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo speaks volumes.

Verdict

At the age of 27, Lingard has done little over the course of the last 18 months to warrant a spot at United. Thus, Solskjaer would do a good job by offloading the midfielder before the start of the 2020/21 campaign.
