Even if Peter Crouch was to retire from football today, he would be holding his head up high…literally.

Stoke City’s affair with Hull City appeared to be heading in the direction of a dire stalemate until Mark Hughes pulled off a tactical masterstroke.

An ineffective Saido Berahino was withdrawn for Peter Crouch who was sent on for the sole purpose of the threat he provides in the air.

And within eight minutes of his introduction, Crouch headed Jonathan Walters’s deep cross into the net to help secure all the three points at the Bet365 stadium and make some history in the process.

For Hughes, that header was merely one of the goals in a 3-1 victory but for Crouch, the goal represented a new feat in what has been a satisfactory career.

According to the statisticians at Opta, the 36-year-old’s header lifted him up to joint-top on the all-time list of players with the most headed goals in Premier League history.

Having the likes of Teddy Sherringham, Dwight Yorke and Alan Shearer as company on any list requires outstanding effort, and therefore Crouch has every reason to be proud.

Going by the numbers above, the former England international now has more proof in regards to being one of the most underrated strikers to grace the English top flight.

His lanky appearance might not be appealing to many, but Crouch makes good use of his stature for sure.

At 36, the striker who spent some of his years at Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth might just have one more season to find that remaining header required to leave him out on his on as the Premier League’s most prolific header of the ball of all-time.

That would mark quite a leap for the Macclesfield-born man.
